Susana Baca

The lady I like is Susana Baca. She's a wonderfully soulful singer from Peru who brings forth African/Spanish traditions in her work. She's also working very hard to preserve Afro-Peruvian culture by establishing a resource center/archive that traces back the arrival of Africans into the country. What's interesting about this aspect of the African Diaspora is that during the time of the slave trade, different members of African tribes were brought into Peru. This lack of homeland community forced Africans to embrace indigenous traditions and mixing them with their varied African heritages, writing songs in the "son" tradition. Son is a mixture of Spanish, Indigenous and African elements, passed down orally with variations on lyrics.
